Cano Island is a national Nature Reserve of approximately 300 hectares including close to 6000 protected hectares of ocean surrounding its shores. Cano Island is situated approximately 12 miles west of the town of Aguitas, Drake Bay. The island hosts precolumbian spheres which are attributed to the aboriginal communities located here before the colonization of this area. One can find corals and rock formations and sealife of many kinds in the often pristine clear waters surrounding this island. The waters can be cloudy if there has been recent rains in the area as the Sierpe River as well as other smaller rivers jetison sediment into the ocean after a rain. Dolphin/Whale Watching Tour This tour takes you on a search for a variety of porpoises and whales which live or transit the waters of our section of the lovely Pacific Ocean. Humpbacks, sea turtles, sea snakes, as well as a myriad of other facinating sealife make this area their home. River/Deep Sea Fishing The river or surf fishing is local and free provided you have your own fishing gear. Deep sea fishing can be arranged by the day or half day as you desire. There are a few options available for deep sea fishing with various boats and captains. Birdwatching Take a walk with Carlos a local guide whose passion is birding. The tour is usually 4 hours and follows the roads and trails of the local area. The area is lush and the bird life abundant. Corcovado National Park - San Pedrillo or Sirena stations Corcovado Park is a wild 100,000 acre (40,470 hectare) biological nature reserve. There is a wide variety of flora and fauna and the local guides know where to look in finding the elusive wildlife.There are two main entrances San Pedrillo and Sirena which are open to the public provided you have a pass and a guide. Horseback Riding Along the beach or through the jungle this tour is economical and a leisurely way to see the area and its charm. Canopy Treetop Adventure - ziplining Zip through the treetop canopy and get a thrill while also learning a little about the area. Sometimes you will see a group of monkeys or other wildlife as well as the flora while on the Zip line tour. Kayaking
San Josecito/Rio Claro Hike This beautiful jungle trail hugs the coast and beaches as you walk your way to San Josescito or closer still, Rio Claro. The hike will usually take 5 hours one way and is only for the fit although the trail is beautiful even if only for an hours hike and back. One should bring plenty of water, a lunch, sun screen and hat and good footwear. Night Tour Enjoy a unique night tour with Tracy, ” The Bug Lady” which will introduce you to the amazing creatures which prefer the nocturnal to come out of the shadows and become busy. The ocean around Drake has various sharks, whales, and simply a myriad of marine life to see and enjoy. The waters do have currents as well as cloudiness from the Sierpe River after a rain so visibility will vary from excellent to poor depending upon the weather. photo courtesy of Osa Divers As of 2013 limits are being placed on the number of individuals allowed into the National Parks and Nature Reserves. This has caused a bit of frustration for those who may be familiar with past years where obtaining an entrance was no hassle. If you do not let us know well in advance that you wish to go to Cano Island or Corcovado National Park, obtaining a ticket for entrance may prove difficult as a last minute decision. ENJOY!
